Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini
This event does not take place at the Sydney Opera House. The venue for this performance is the Capitol Theatre, Sydney.
One of Opera Australia’s most loved productions makes its Capitol Theatre premiere, ready to capture your imagination and your heart, whether for the first time or all over again from 24 October - 4 November 2017.
Madama Butterfly composed by Giacomo Puccini, one of the world’s most famous love stories, is a heartbreakingly beautiful romantic tragedy about a Japanese Geisha who marries a US sailor, only to be abandoned by him.
Fire, water and ice: A young Japanese geisha falls head-over-heels in love with her new American husband. She believes their love is real, even after three years without so much as a word from him. Everyone around her knows the truth. They try to convince her to move on but she won't. She can't. Rejected by her past, and forgotten by the man she loves, she waits.
With set and costume design inspired by Japan, this production’s combination of wood, water, silk and flame is astonishingly elegant.
Karah Son and Hyesoung Kwon sing Puccini's much-loved music, breathtakingly beautiful from first love to tragic end.
