Daniel Hope and Zurich Chamber Orchestra

Hope’s imagination and intelligence leading the intrepid and versatile Zurich Chamber Orchestra erupts in an astonishing performance of well-loved classics.

One performance on Sunday, 9 September 2018 - In the Concert Hall

Classical music's great Hope lives up to his name

Since 2016, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra has been directed by the British virtuoso violinist Daniel Hope. Hope's imagination and intelligence has refreshed even the most familiar music. He always finds a surprising colour, or reveals something new, so he's a great fit for the intrepid and versatile Zurich band who can turn on a dime from baroque music to electronica. The Orchestra, established in 1945 boasts an impressive line-up of collaborators and conductors. Hope's appointment was something of a homecoming – he's had a relationship with the orchestra from a young age.

Hope's program for this Australian debut pays tribute to his mentor, violinist Yehudi Menuhin, with a meditative commission, Unfinished Journey, and pieces that were Menuhin's calling cards by Elgar, Mendelssohn and Bach. The intricate interplay of voices in Bach's double concerto was inspired by another Baroque legend: Antonio Vivaldi. Hope’s acclaimed recording of the perhaps over-familiar Four Seasons makes the piece sound brand new, with every bird song, barking dog, autumnal hunt and winter wind leaping out of Vivaldi’s imagination and into our astonished ears. Hear this beloved work again for the first time.

Children aged 15 years and under must be accompanied at all times. Children aged 0-23 months  at the time of a performance may be seated on a parent’s lap free of charge.  All children occupying a seat or aged 2 years of age must hold a valid ticket.

Presented by Sydney Opera House.
